Just like steel, stainless steel has the basic components of iron and carbon but a layer of chromium is added, producing an alloy with significant differences to typical steel. The chromium, which makes up 14 percent by weight of the total alloy, forms a skin on the surface of the metal when it comes in contact with oxygen. It protects it and makes it water- and air-tight. This skin, called ‘chromium oxide,' prevents the onset of rust and is particularly scratch-resistant. When rubbed against an abrasive surface, the skin immediately reforms again over the metal, protecting it from scratching.
Stainless steel first appeared commercially in the 1890's when Harry Bearley, acknowledged historically as the father of stainless steel, completed the process of refining chromium that was free of carbon, giving birth to what we know today as stainless steel.
