Stainless steel is a very popular material used in various fields such as construction, automotive, communications, and even kitchenware. It has gained its popularity due to the fact that it has a higher resistance to rusting and corrosion. How is steel made?
Stainless steel is not hard to make. All you need in order to create this alloy is regular steel, a basic oxygen furnace, and Chromium. These are all the stainless steel produce processing equipment that you need.
Steel is basically iron without most of its impurities such as silica phosphorous and sulfur. It has a consistent concentration of Carbon which is 0.50 to 1.50 percent. These impurities are taken away through the use of a blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace, two of the major stainless steel produce processing equipment. First, steel passes through a blast furnace and it smelts the steel. The molten steel is then passed through the basic oxygen furnace where it becomes liquid steel. Afterwards, oxygen is blown into the liquid steel and this creates a chemical reaction within the metal. This reaction removes the last traces of Carbon and other unwanted elements in the metal. After this process, a slab of steel is now created.
Other steel plants use a more primitive stainless steel produce processing equipment called the open hearth furnace. Using this machine will take a longer time to create steel compared to using the basic oxygen furnace, but it also produces the same results. This furnace works by also removing excess carbon and other elements from the steel by placing it under extreme temperatures which burns away all the extra carbon found in it.
A more durable metal is produced by using these stainless steel produce processing equipment. However, it also has a few drawbacks. Though this metal may be very durable, it is not resistant to rust and corrosion. To solve this problem, steel should then be made into stainless steel.
From steel to stainless steel
After going through the process of making steel, you are now ready to make it stainless. Stainless steel is a metal alloy mixed with Chromium. Chromium is the same element found in tire caps and other products. It is a steel-gray, lustrous, hard metal that has a high polish and high melting point.
By combining this element with the alloy, it will create a fine film on the surface of the steel which will protect it from rust and corrosion. By adding 10 to 30 percent of Chromium to the liquid steel, you will be able to create stainless steel. The process of creating stainless steel is not different from the process of making steel. Only, you have to add the Chromium before you start cooling the steel.
